Amen. 전지 전능하시고 자비로운 하나님아버지 우리가 다른 사람들의 종이 될 수 있도록 당신께서 우리의 주인이 되시기를 기원하옵나이다. MY DEAR KOREAN friends, grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! 나의 사랑하는 한국 친구이자, 주안에서 가족이신 여러분, 예수님의 이름으로 은혜와 평강이 넘치기를 기원합니다. I bring you greetings this morning on behalf of your partner church, The First Church in Windsor, Connecticut, USA. 나는 미국 코네티커트주에 있으며, 산운교회와 형제교회인 제일 윈저교회 의 담임목사로서 오늘 이 시간 여러분에게 문안을 올립니다. Please understand that the greetings I bring are not merely pro forma; on the contrary, they are heartfelt and sincere. 내가 드리는 이 인사는 단순한 pro forma(형식적인 인사) 가 아니라 진실되고, 진정한 마음에서 드리는 인사라는 것을 알아주시기 바랍니다(박수…..요망) We mention your congregation in our prayers each Sunday and today the entire First Church community rejoices with you as you dedicate this beautiful, church building. 우리 교회 교인들은 매주 산운교회에 대해서 기도해왔습니다. 그리고 오늘 제일 윈저교회 모든 교우들은 이렇게 아름다운 교회 건물을 봉헌하는 여러분 들과 더불어 같이 기뻐하고 있습니다. Looking around at your beautiful new church reminds me about a pastor I once knew who had a bad habit of telling stories that were not always true. 여러분들의 아름다운 이 멋진 교회를 둘러보니, 한때 내가 알고 지내던 목사님이 떠오릅니다. 그는 항상 진실이 아닌 이야기를 말하는 나쁜 습관을 가지고 있었습니다. Although he was a faithful servant of the Lord, he would sometimes become too excited in the pulpit, and in his excitement he would start to stretch the truth. 비록 그는 하나님의 충실한 종이었지만, 때때로 설교할 때 너무 흥분 하곤 했습니다. 그리고 흥분할 때마다 진실을 과장하곤 했습니다. In order to help himself overcome this tendency he asked the senior deacon to sit in the back pew and instructed him to wave his arms if he began to get too carried away. 그는 스스로 이렇게 진실을 왜곡하는 습성을 고치기 위해서, 그는 나이 드신 집사님에게 부탁을 했습니다. “ 의자 뒷 좌석에 앉아 계셨다가, 제가 설교 중 너무 과장된 말을 할 때마다 팔을 흔들어달라.”는 것이 었습니다. The following Sunday when the preacher began his sermon everything started off fine. 다음 주일날 그 목사님은 설교를 잘 시작하셨고, 진행도 잘 하고 게셨습니다. But then toward the middle of the sermon the minister said to the congregation, “By the way, did I ever tell you about the time I preached in a church that was three kilometers long?” 그러나 목사님은 설교 중간쯤에 성도들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨던 것입니다. “그런데, 길이가 3킬로미터나 길게 뻗은 어떤 교회에서 설교했던 적이 있다고 했지요?” Immediately, the senior deacon jumped to his feet and began to wave his arms wildly. 그때, 즉시, 나이든 집사님께서 벌떡 일어나셨고, 마구 손을 흔들어댔습니다. “And five centimeters wide!” the pastor quickly added. (과장 되었다고 생각해서, 이번에는 줄여 서 말한다고 )“그리고 그 교회의 넓이는 (고작)5센지미터…”라고 말을 이었습니다.( 사실 대로 말해야지, 과장하면 안된다는 의미로서-휴렛목사님도 산운교회를 객관적으로 언급하고 사실대로 말하고자 하신다는 의지를 나타내는 말) This wonderful new building is neither too long, nor too wide. It is perfect in every way and I am indeed honored and humbled to be able to share in this service of worship with you. 우리의 이 아름다운 교회는 너무 길지도, 너무 넓지도 않습니다. 이 교회는 모든 면에 있어서 여러분들에게는 가장 알맞은 교회입니다. 뿐만 아니라, 나는 여러분들과 함께하는 이 예배가 가장 영광스럽고 제 마음도 겸허해 지는 것을 느낍니다. I know this building represents many years of praying and planning, but today all your hard work has paid off. 이 교회를 건축하기 위해 여러분들께서는 여러 해 동안 기도하며, 설게하고, 계획해 왔던 교회라는 것을 나는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그러나 오늘 이 교회는 여러분 들의 엄청난 노력의 대가를 지불한 바로 그 교회입니다. None of this would have been possible of course, without your deep faith in God, your generous stewardship, and the outstanding leadership of my esteemed colleague and good friend, Pastor Lee. 물론 내가 존경하는 동료 목사이며, 친구인 이경림목사의 지도력과 여러분들은 이 교회의 지체로서 깊고도 넓은 사명의식, 그리고 하나님의 산운교회에대한 깊은 사랑 없이는 어느 누구도 불가능 했을 거라고 생각했을 겁니다. (눈물남) The dedication and generosity of your congregation are a source of inspiration to me and to every member of my congregation. 산운교회 성도님들께서 보여주신 이런 헌신과 자비는 저 뿐만 아니라, 우리 윈저교회의 모든 성도들에게도 큰 성령의 감동이 되고있습니다. Our scripture lesson for this morning from Hebrews, however, reminds us that the real builder of this house is God, for according to chapter three, verse four, God is “the builder of all things.” 오늘아침 히브리서 기자가 주는 말씀은 “이 하나님의 집을 지으신 이는 하나님 이시라는 것을 우리들에게 기억시키고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 3장 4절 말씀에 의하면, 모든 것을 지으신 이는 하나님이시라고 말씀하고 계십니다. In other words, my dear friends, God is the master builder and we are merely the custodians, the caretakers so to speak, over all that God has given us. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 다른 말로 하면, 하나님은 이 집의 주인 이시라는 겁니다. 그리고 우리는 단순히 이 집의 관리인이고, 다시 말해서, 우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것들을 관리하며 돌보는 사람이란 것입니다. This morning, as we gather together to celebrate the completion of your new building, let us pause for a moment to ask ourselves, what it means to call this place the house of God. 오늘아침, 우리들은 하나님의 새 성전 을 완성하고 예배 드리기 위해서 이 자리에 모였습니다. 잠시만 생각해 봅시다. 한번 우리 스스로에게 물어봅시다. 이곳을 하나님의 성전으로 부르는 의미가 무엇입니까? What kind of building must this be in order to be used for purposes that will be pleasing to God and consistent with the ministry and mission of the Sanwoon church? 이 곳은 과연 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 하나님께서 바라는 소명과 선교에 합당한 곳으로 사용되기 위해서 세워진 건물입니까? Let us begin by reminding ourselves that first of all, in order to be a true house of God, this building must always be a house of WORSHIP. 하나님의 진실된 성전이 되기 위해서, 우리 자신에게 무엇보다도 이곳은 예배 드리며 경배하는 곳이라는 것을 기억하면서 시작하셔야 됩니다. To step into this building is to step into sacred space. 이 성전에 들어오는 것은 신성한 곳에 들어오는 것입니다. There are many reasons for coming to church but the primary reason is to praise God’s holy name. 교회에 오는 많은 이유가 있습니다만 가장 우선하는 것이 거룩한 하나님을 찬양하는 것입니다. I am sure there are many other magnificent buildings in this city. 이 지역(분당, 판교)에 엄청나게 커다란 건물들이 많이 있는 줄 압니다. But this building was not made to serve as an office, a school, or a museum. 그러나 이 건물은 사무실이나, 학교나, 박물관처럼 사용되도록 만들어진 건물이 아닙니다. The primary purpose of the house of God is to worship God and to offer him our thanks and praise. 하나님의 성전으로서 가장 우선적인 목적은 하나님께 예배 드리고, 하나님께 감사 드리고, 경배하는 곳입니다. Think about it for a moment. There are many other organizations that do many of the things we do. 잠깐 생각해 봅시다. 우리는 여러 조직에 속해있으면서 많은 일들을 하고 있습니다. There are many other organizations that counsel people. 사람들을 상담해주는 기관들도 많이 있습니다. There are many other organizations that raise money. 돈을 많이 버는 회사들도 있습니다. There are many other organizations that do good works. 좋은 일을 하는 단체들도 많이 있습니다. But there is only one organization I know of whose primary function is to worship God and that organization is the church of Jesus Christ. 그러나 내가 아는 바로는 하나님을 경배하는일을 전적으로 하기위해 이루어진 조직은 오직 하나, 하나님의 교회뿐입니다. Some years ago, the late Archbishop William Temple said, “This world can be saved from political chaos and collapse by one thing only and that is worship.” 몇 년 전에 고(작고하신) 윌리엄 템플 대주교께서, “이세상은 정치적 혼란과 타락으로부터 구할 수 있는 것은 오직 예배밖에 없다.”고 말씀하셨습니다. He was right. This world cannot be saved by politics. 윌리엄 대주교의 말이 옳습니다. 정치가 이세상을 구원할 수 없습니다. Neither can it be saved by business. 어떤 사업으로도 이세상을 구원할 수 없습니다. On the contrary, it can only be saved by worship because worship is the one thing that has the power to transform us. 반대로 , 이세상을 구원하려면 예배로 인해서만 구원이 가능합니다. 우리를 변화시킬 힘을 가진 것은 오직 진정한 예배입니다. Through worship we are not only reminded who we are, but we are also reminded whose we are. 예배를 통해서, 우리가 누구인가를 알뿐만 아니라, 우리가 누구의 것(소유물)인가를 알게 해 줍니다. Through worship we are reminded that we are children of God, that we belong to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and that we are called to be agents of God’s justice and love. 예배를 통해서, 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 것과, 우리는 하나님에 속한 자라는 것과, 하나님의 공의와 사랑을 전하는 자라는 것을 알게 해 줍니다. If this is truly a house build by God then it must always remain, first and foremost, a house of worship. 만약 이곳이 하나님에 의해서 지어진 성전이라면, 무엇보다도 우선적으로 해야 할 것은 경배하는 성전이라는 것입니다. Secondly, if this is indeed, the house of God then it must also be a house of FELLOWSHIP. 두 번째로는, 이곳이 하나님의 성전이라면, 교재의 장소가 되어야 할 것 입니다. I have always been fond of the story about the Jewish boy who asked his father why he went to synagogue despite the fact that he did not believe in God. 나는 유태인 소년이 그의 아버지께 물었습니다.” 아버지는 하나님의 존재를 믿지도 않으면서 왜 유태인 회당에 다니십니까?”라고 묻는 그 유태인 소년에 관한 이야기를 항상 좋아해 왔습니다. The father said, “People go to synagogue for lots of reasons. Your neighbor, Mr. Goldfarb goes to talk to God. I go to talk to Mr. Goldfarb.” 그 소년의 아버지는 “ 사람들은 많은 이유 때문에 회당에 간다. 우리 이웃 골드파브씨도 하나님과 대화하기 위해 거기에 가신다. 나는 골드 파브씨와 대화하러 거기 가지만….”(사람을 만나는 장소로서의 교회를 말하고자 함) One of the primary missions of the church is to provide fellowship. 교회에서 우리가 해야 할 중요한 일중 하나가 교재 하는 것 입니다. Too many people today lead lonely, isolated lives. 오늘날 너무 많은 사람들이 고독하고 고립된 삶을 살고 있습니다. People need to have a sense of purpose but they also need to have a sense of place. 사람들은 목표의식을 가져야 합니다. 그러나 그들은 또한 장소의식도 가져야 합니다. They need to have a place where they feel welcomed and accepted—not because of anything they have achieved, but simply because of who they are. 사람들은 그들이 환영을 받고, 깃들 수 있는 곳이 있어야 합니다. 그들이 (가지고 있는 재물과 같이) 성취한 것에 의해서가 아니라, 그들이 누구냐(누구의 자녀이냐) 즉 하나님의 자녀이므로 이곳에서 깃들 권리가 있다는 말입니다. A real church needs to be more than just a place of worship. 진정한 하나님의 교회는 예배 드리는 장소 이상 되어야 합니다. It also has to be a real community. 교회는 당연히 공동체를 이루어야 합니다. It has to be place where everyone knows your name and where no one is made to feel like a stranger. 모든 사람이 우리들의 이름을 알고 아무도 낯선 사람으로 느끼지 않는 바로 그런 곳이 되어야 합니다. It has to be a place where no matter what you look like, where you come from, or what language you speak, everyone is made to feel welcome. 우리가 어떻게 보이든 간에 어디서 왔던 간에, 어떤 언어를 사용하던 간에, 모든 사람들을 환영하는 그런 곳이 되어야 합니다. Everyone is made to feel as if he or she is part of God’s community. 모든 사람들을 마치 하나님의 공동체의 한 부분(지체)이 된 것처럼 느끼도록 해야 합니다. The house of God is a place where differences are acknowledged and honestly faced up to. 하나님의 성전은 우리 모두는 서로 서로 다르다(유태인적인 생각)는 것을 진정으로 인정하고, 받아들이는 곳 이어야 합니다. We do not have to fear differences in the house of God because “we are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). 우리는 하나님의 성전 안에서 서로 다르다는 것을 두려워 하지 말아야 합니다. 갈라디아서 3장 28절은 “여러분은 그리스도 예수 안에서 모두 하나입니다. ”라고 말씀하십니다. True fellowship is a place where all people are welcomed and made to feel as though they too, are part of God’s community. 진정한 우정은 모든 사람들이 환영 받고, 또한 마치 그들이 하나님의 공동체의 한 부분(지체)이 된 것처럼 느끼게 해야 합니다. As Saint Augustine, one of the early church fathers once said, “Although we may not all think alike can we not all love alike?” 초대교회의 지도자중 한 분이셨던 성 어거스틴은 “우리가 생각은 서로 다를 지라도 똑 같이 서로 사랑 하지 말란 법이 있는가?” We come to church primarily to worship God, but we also come to make friends. 우리는 우선적으로 하나님께 경배 드리기 위하여 교회에 옵니다. 그러나 사람과 교제 하기 위해서도 온다는 것이다. The official name of the Quaker Church is “The Religious Society of Friends.” 퀘이커교회의 공식 명칭은 “종교적인 친구(프렌드)회”입니다. In truth, that is what every church should be—a community of friends. 사실 모든 교회는 친구(우정)의 공동체임에 틀림이 없습니다. No matter how beautiful a church building is it cannot be the house of God if it is not also a house of fellowship. 아무리 교회의 건물이 아름답다손 치더라도, 그곳에 우정이 없다면 하나님의 집이 될 수가 없습니다. Third and finally, in order to be the house of God, a church must also be a house of PEACE. We are not only called to be in right relationship with ourselves, but we are also called to be in right relationship with other people, other nations, and other cultures. 세 번째, 마지막으로, 하나님의 성전이 되기 위해서는, 교회는 평화의 장소가 되어야 합니다. 우리는 우리끼리 올바른 관계를 이루도록 명령 받았으며, 다른 사람들과, 다른 나라들과, 다른 문화나 문명에게도 올바른 관계를 가지도록 명령 받았습니다. We live in a world that is both broken and divided. 우리는 지금 깨어지고 찢겨진 세계에 살고 있습니다. Our task is to reconcile the world to God by preaching peace to “those who are near and to those who are far off” (Isaiah 57:19). 우리가 해야 할 일은 “내가 먼 곳과 가까운 곳에 사는 사람에게 진정한 평화를 주겠다” 라는 말씀 처럼 하나님의 이세상을 평화로서 화해하는 것입니다. This is not to deny that the use of force is sometimes necessary. 평화를 위해서는 때로는 힘을 사용하는 것이 필요하다는 것에 부인하지는 않습니다. It is only meant to remind us that for followers of Jesus Christ peace is always the preferred option and the goal toward which we are always striving. 예수그리스도를 따르는 사람들을 위해서, 평화는 항상 우선해야 할 선택이고 이루어 나아가야 할 목표라는 것을 기억하십시요 In the kind of world in which we live peace can sometimes seem a weary way off. 우리가 살아가는데 있어서, 평화라는 이말 은 때로는 우리를 피곤하고 짜증나게하는 것처럼 보이기도 하합니다. The prophet Jeremiah surely spoke a word for our age when he said, “We looked for peace, but no peace came” (Jeremiah 8:15). 예례미야 선지자는 “우리가 평화를 바랐으나 좋은 것은 하나도 오지 않았다.” 라고 백성들에게 말했습니다. But to give up on peace is to give up on God. 그러나 평화를 포기하는 것은 하나님을 포기하는 것입니다. God’s will for humankind is peace. 우리 인간들을 위한 하나님의 의지는 평화입니다. The problem with the church is not that we haven’t made peace our goal, but that we have not made it our business. 교회마다 문제점은 평화를 우리의 목표로 만드는 것에 있는 것이 아니라. 평화를 우리의(우리가 지속적으로 추진해야 하는) 사업으로 하지 않는 다는 것입니다. A little girl in our church school recently said to me, “If I could have three wishes, world peace would be all three.” 최근에 우리교회에 한 소녀가 나에게 , ”만일 내가 세가지 소원이 있다면, 세개가 모두 세계의 평화입니다.”라고 말했습니다. Unfortunately, we can’t just wish for peace. 불행히도, 우리는 평화에대한 소망을 가질 수가 없습니다. On the contrary, we have to fight for it, work for it, and demand it from our governments as if peace were God’s most cherished hope for humanity, which indeed it is. 그러나 (평화에 대한소망을 가져야하며) , 마치 평화는 하나님의 가장 소중한 희망이고 그것을 인간에게 진정으로 베풀어 주신 것 처럼, 우리는 평화를 위해 싸워야만 하고, 정부로부터 그것을 요구해야만 합니다. No church, however beautiful it may be, has the right to call itself the house of God, unless it is also committed to being a house of peace. 아무리 교회가 아름답다고 하더라도, 그교회가 평강의 교회가 되지 못하면, 하나님의 성전이라 부를수 없습니다. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I salute you on the completion of this spectacular new building. 나의 사랑하는 성도 형제 자매 여러분, 나는 이 새롭게 지어진 진 이 멋진 교회가 잘 완공된 것에 경의를 표합니다. May it always serve as a house of worship, a house of fellowship, and a house of peace. 이곳은 에배드리는 성전으로, 우정을 나누는 장소로, 평화의 전당이 될것임을 믿습니다. May it always symbolize your highest aspirations and remind you of God’s never-ending mercy, grace, and love. 이곳은 여러분들의 최고의 열정이 어우러져 있는 장소이고, 여러분들이 영원히 하나님의 자비와 은헤와 사랑을 기억하게 하는 성전임을 믿습니다.
